Transforming Rehabilitation Nursing Practice in a Shared Decision-Making World
Tim Porter-O'Grady, EdD RN Cs CNNA FAAN
The conflict of preparing for and leading through the many and varied changes in an altered healthcare system is much discussed, but with too little focus on practice in the context of a new paradigm and new age. How does the nurse function in the quantum age, when most of what we learned about healthcare is from the industrial age? This presentation focuses on the new practice realities and the new rules for clinical practice.

Rehabilitation Nursing Journal Manuscript Consultation
Have you ever been interested in getting published, or had an idea for a journal article? The experts want to talk to you! Members of the Rehabilitation Nursing Editorial Board are ready to assist potential authors with development of ideas for manuscripts. Editorial board members will meet individually with authors to discuss manuscripts in various stages of development, from abstracts or outlines describing a potential manuscript to drafts of actual manuscripts. Plan to bring whatever written material you have developed (abstract, outline, or draft of manuscript) to the consultation session and receive suggestions and feedback to guide further development.

Sign-up sheets for this session will be available at the conference.

2–3:15 pm Concurrent Sessions 1.5 CH

Decisions at the Bedside: Analyzing the Art of Making Decisions (201)
Ruth Hansten, PhD MBA RN FACHE
Staff nurses can dissect the process of clinical decision-making as it grows from a task-based, conceptual mode to expert practice using examples in clinical practice. A six-step model of problem solving will be offered to provide a template decision-making both at the bedside and beyond.

PPS Strategies (202)
Sarah Heenan, BA RN
It is a crucial time for positioning within the acute inpatient rehabilitation community in anticipation of future CMS changes within the PPS reimbursement system. Analyze the importance of the current reporting trends and the inpatient client mix and how to use the results to target areas of process improvement.

Injury Prevention: Safe Patient Handling & Movement (203)
Audrey Nelson, PhD RN FAAN
Explore new evidence that has emerged over the last five years related to the science of patient care ergonomics and strategies developed to prevent musculoskeletal injuries associated with high-risk patient handling and movement tasks. Dr. Nelson will discuss new and emerging technologies, unit-based peer leaders, and ergonomic assessment protocol for high risk nursing units. Tips on “building a business case” to support implementation of the program will also be provided.

Adjustment to Disability Across the Lifespan (204)
Charles H. Tubre, BA
Is “adjustment” to disability a rehabilitation myth? Drawing from real-life experiences, 48 years post injury and entering his 30th year of working with others, Charles Tubre will share some of what he has learned about living in the real world with a disability after the acute care and rehabilitation experience. Explore the possibility that one never adjusts, but rather learns to “accommodate” to living life with a disability.

   7–10 pm RNF Benefit Event

New Orleans School of Cooking
Fun is the primary ingredient at the New Orleans School of Cooking! Cajun and Creole experts will teach ARN members and RNF supporters how to prepare—and eat!—such New Orleans specialties as Gumbo, Creole Jambalaya, and Pralines. It is a "ga-ron-teed" good time for all, seasoned with history, trivia, and tall tales. Our private room is located on the top of a New Orleans landmark that was once the brewing and bottling house of Jax Beer and now offers panoramic views of the Mississippi River, the French Quarter , and Vieux Carre. You will enjoy a delicious dinner, and learn about the city and the culture of "Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!" (Let The Goods Times Roll!) This event is limited to a maximum of 200 people. Last bus leaves the hotel at 6:45 pm.
