EducationARN 2003 Annual Educational ConferenceThursday, October 16
Transforming Rehabilitation Nursing Practice in a Shared Decision-Making World Tim Porter-O'Grady, EdD RN Cs CNNA FAAN The conflict of preparing for and leading through the many and varied changes in an altered healthcare system is much discussed, but with too little focus on practice in the context of a new paradigm and new age. How does the nurse function in the quantum age, when most of what we learned about healthcare is from the industrial age? This presentation focuses on the new practice realities and the new rules for clinical practice.

Decisions at the Bedside: Analyzing the Art of Making Decisions (201) Ruth Hansten, PhD MBA RN FACHE Staff nurses can dissect the process of clinical decision-making as it grows from a task-based, conceptual mode to expert practice using examples in clinical practice. A six-step model of problem solving will be offered to provide a template decision-making both at the bedside and beyond. PPS Strategies (202) Sarah Heenan, BA RN It is a crucial time for positioning within the acute inpatient rehabilitation community in anticipation of future CMS changes within the PPS reimbursement system. Analyze the importance of the current reporting trends and the inpatient client mix and how to use the results to target areas of process improvement. Injury Prevention: Safe Patient Handling & Movement (203) Audrey Nelson, PhD RN FAAN Explore new evidence that has emerged over the last five years related to the science of patient care ergonomics and strategies developed to prevent musculoskeletal injuries associated with high-risk patient handling and movement tasks. Dr. Nelson will discuss new and emerging technologies, unit-based peer leaders, and ergonomic assessment protocol for high risk nursing units. Tips on “building a business case” to support implementation of the program will also be provided. Adjustment to Disability Across the Lifespan (204) Charles H. Tubre, BA Is “adjustment” to disability a rehabilitation myth? Drawing from real-life experiences, 48 years post injury and entering his 30th year of working with others, Charles Tubre will share some of what he has learned about living in the real world with a disability after the acute care and rehabilitation experience. Explore the possibility that one never adjusts, but rather learns to “accommodate” to living life with a disability.
