You Are the Future of Rehabilitation Nursing

Monday, October 31, 1–6 pm
Tuesday, November 1, 7:30 am–5 pm

Registration for this course will open at 12pm outside of Miranda 1-4 meetings rooms.

Virginia Beeson, MSN CNAA
Aloma "Cookie" Gender, MSN RN CRRN
Karen M. Preston, PHN MS CRRN FIALCP

Learning Objectives:

  • Define different types of nursing leadership
  • Define ARN essential leadership traits and identify skills that support and demonstrate leadership traits.
  • Explore the roles and responsibilities related to leading clinically and professionally.
  • Explore how nurse leaders will impact the future of healthcare.

Each day rehabilitation nurses provide excellence in clinical care to help their patients reach the best outcomes, but the demands are becoming more numerous: negotiating a facility's politics, navigating regulatory agencies, dealing with complex care issues, managing a multigenerational workforce, building collaborative relationships, understanding financial complexities, and dealing with multiple documentation issues. In 2010 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released the report "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health," which outlined an "action-oriented blueprint" for the future of nursing. One of the key messages of the report was that nurses must serve as leaders in transforming health care.

This course will provide you with the tools to lead change and control your professional destiny. Each attendee will gain a better understanding of his or her existing leadership skills and devise a leadership development plan that will lead to more success and satisfaction, both professionally and personally. ARN's Essential Leadership Course will provide you with the insight and skills necessary to become a leader within your setting, profession, and ARN. Help improve the future for rehabilitation nurses and patients and sign up today!

Day 1conf1108
Attendees will get to know one another and meet the key nursing leaders who will be serving as faculty. ARN leaders Cookie Gender and Karen Preston will join speaker and consultant Virginia Beeson to define the different types of leadership and share specific traits and skills identified by ARN as essential for leading within rehabilitation nursing.

Day 2
Virginia Beeson will explore the importance of "Building a Culture of Leadership" and what this means. The report from the IOM, "The Future of Nursing," will demand new and different leadership skills. What are these skills? How do we become proficient in them? We will explore the critical leadership characteristics of accountability, conflict resolution, and courage. Attendees will then have an opportunity to assess their leadership skills and devise a personal leadership plan. Finally, ARN leaders will share opportunities for leadership development outside of the workplace that will enhance leadership skills, both personally and professionally.

The registration fee includes course materials, 11.25 nursing contact hours (CHs), continental breakfast, lunch, and snack breaks throughout the 1.5-day course.
