Chapter Support Committee Member

Volunteer/ Engagement Responsibilities

  • Attends committee meetings and actively engages in discussions.
  • Has a working knowledge of the committee work plan developed by the committee Chair, Co-chair, and board liaison that will allow the committee to achieve the committee goals and objectives approved by the ARN Board for the year.
  • Completes committee work as assigned by the Chair, Co-chair, and Board Liaison.
  • Assists in verifying and maintaining correct data and chapter roster information, specifically the Chapter board.
  • Provides guidance to nurses interested in forming a local chapter.
  • Along with staff, reviews chapter charter applications and makes a recommendation to the ARN Board for acceptance or rejection.
  • Supports staff in obtaining annual financial, activity, and contact forms required from chapters.
  • Works with staff to plan the annual chapter event (if applicable) that takes place around the annual conference.
    • Encouraged to attend the event in person or virtually, depending on the location of the event.
  • Reviews the chapter manual on an annual basis, recommending changes to enhance the effectiveness of the manual.
  • As needed: reviews the chapter formation materials including the model chapter bylaws and makes recommendations for updates.
  • As needed: assist chapters in finding alternative solutions to their problems (i.e. new ARN Board members).
  • Manages the Chapter Award applications.
    • The chapter award will be promoted on an annual basis with the theme or focus of the award to be determined by the Chapter Support Committee and staff.
    • Chapter Award should be determined by set criteria (currently a chapter scorecard) managed and determined by the Chapter Support Committee.
    • This will allow specific opportunities for the chapters to achieve a set monetary award.

Conference Planning Subcommittee Member

  • 2 - 6 hours per month (this subcommittee requires more hours during the beginning of the year, and closer to the conference).

  • Reviews the conference evaluations from the previous year to identify successes and areas for improvement in the educational program.

  • Recruits speakers, reviews potential speakers’ qualifications, and makes final presenter selections.
  • Participates in meeting, greeting, and introducing presenters at the conference.

  5. Manages and enriches the ARN Awards & Scholarships application, selection, and ceremony procedures.
  6. Guides and contributes to the strategic direction of ARN's Volunteer Pathway, as well as spearheads initiatives for enhanced volunteer engagement and recruitment.
  7. Supervises and offers strategic input for ARN's Career Center.
  8. Leads and actively shapes ARN's member engagement strategies, including:
    1. Directs and provides strategic input for ARN's Pulse newsletter.
    2. Leads and contributes strategic input to the development of ARN's Member Center on rehabnurse.org.
    3. Supervises and collaboratively shapes ARN's Special Interest Groups in conjunction with the CEPU.
    4. Manages and actively contributes to the development and execution of ARN's Member Circle.
  9. Fosters active involvement of current ARN Fellows through a comprehensive approach:
    1. Strategic Development: Develops and implements clear responsibilities and engagement pathways for ARN's current Fellows.
    2. Standards Enforcement: Establishes and enforces robust guidelines and expectations for Fellows post-selection to maintain high standards and contributions.

Fellowship Engagement Committee Member

  • Attends committee meetings.

  • Recruits potential candidates by contacting chapter presidents and other interested members to encourage interest in leadership.
  • Assists the committee Chair by contacting potential nominees. The committee member:
    • Places calls to their assigned potential nominees to assess interest in running for office, answer questions, conduct interviews, and notify staff of potential nominees’ willingness to run for office.
    • Reviews the policies, procedures, position descriptions, and deadlines for required information with the potential candidates.
      • Forward copies and provide clarification as requested.
    • Obtains permission to place potential nominees’ names on the ballot for the identified position or another position, if necessary.
    • Interview all qualified candidates for each position. References should be interviewed as needed.
    • Participates in the Nominating and Leadership Development Committee conference call to select the slate of candidates.
  • Identifies potential leaders for committees, task forces, and other ARN opportunities.
    • Reviews ARN competencies and updates them when necessary.
    • Networks and interacts with attendees at the ARN annual conference to help identify members who are enthusiastic about ARN and demonstrate leadership ability.

      • Learns about areas of interest, expertise, and leadership potential for ARN.

  • Must be knowledgeable about the functions and expectations of an Accredited Provider Unit.

Commitment Length

  • The term is 2 years for the Chair.
  • The Chair can only serve one term consecutively.
  • It is preferred (but not required) that the Chair later serves as a member of the Subcommittee for at least one year after stepping down as Chair.

Commitment Time

  • 3 - 6 hours per month
  • This subcommittee typically meets once every other month but may meet more frequently related to specific projects.

  • Nurse with an undergraduate nursing degree (BSN) and a research-focused doctoral degree (PhD).

Commitment Length

  • The term is 1 year for the Chair, with the goal being to move the existing Co-chair into the Chair position after the 1 year term is up.
  • The Chair can only serve one term consecutively.
  • It is preferred (but not required) that the Chair later serves as a committee member of the committee for at least one year after stepping down as Chair.

Commitment Time

  • 30 hours total

Volunteer/ Engagement Responsibilities

Continuing Education Provider Unit (CEPU) Chair (also known as APPD) or Co-chair

  • Oversees each of the CEPU Subcommittees: Conference Planning Subcommittee, Existing Product Maintenance Subcommittee, New Product Development Subcommittee, and Advancing Science & Practice Subcommittee; and attends meetings of these subcommittees as necessary.
  • The Chair of the CEPU also serves as ARN’s Accredited Provider Program Director (APPD).
  • Has a working knowledge of foundational documents such as manuals, forms, and tools provided by the NCPD Accreditation Program; NCPD Accreditation Program criteria; updated materials on the NCPD Accreditation Program website; State Board of Nursing rules; and the Nursing Professional Development Scope and Standards of Practice (ANDP, 2016).
  • Must comply with the role description for this position as defined and further detailed in ANCC’s “Overview Role of the APPD in an Accredited Provider Unit.” This document details how the APPD serves as the: Leader, Advocate, Educator, Mentor, Evaluator, Collaborator, and Learner of the Provider Unit.
  • As defined in the ANCC APPD Role Description, the APPD is responsible for working with ARN Staff and volunteers to complete the following:

Rehabilitation Nursing Editorial Board Chair (also known as RNJ Editor)

  • The editor’s term of contract is two years and is renewable for up to two terms (up to 4 years).

  • Reviews all manuscripts and makes decisions regarding their disposition based on peer review, Rehabilitation Nursing Journal Editorial Board (RNJ EB) members’ reviews and own review.
  • Is responsible for establishing and maintaining an effective and rapid peer review process.
  • In the final year of the final term, works with and supervises Associate Editor, assigning specific manuscripts for review. Seeks input from Associate Editor on manuscript reviewers and manuscript review and decisions.
  • Drafts letters to authors with specific feedback regarding manuscript revisions within the manuscript platform tool.
  • Designates manuscripts for publication in a specific issue and their order.
  • Selects resource reviews for publication in a specific issue.
  • Reviews all typeset articles and the entire journal layout prior to printing.
  • Reviews guidelines for authors and manuscript evaluation forms; works with journal staff to revise these guidelines and forms as needed.
  • Maintains regular communication with the publisher and other journal staff as appropriate; the Rehabilitation Nursing Journal Editorial Board (RNJ EB); and the ARN Board and executive director.
  • Uses a designated online peer-review system to export edited and approved manuscripts to publisher.
  • Contacts all paper and poster presenters from annual conference to encourage manuscript submissions.
  • Attends the ARN Annual Educational Conference. Registration will be covered by ARN as outlined in the budget.
  • Attends International Academy of Nursing Editors (INANE) when taking place domestically. Registration and travel will be covered by ARN as outlined in the budget.

MOVE ARN FORWARD: BOARD OF DIRECTORS

ARN Board of Directors President or President-Elect

Volunteer/ Engagement Responsibilities

    • Shall serve as the chief executive officer of the Association and shall in general supervise and control the affairs of the Association (Bylaws: Article VII, Section 1).
    • Shall preside at all meetings of the Board of Directors (Bylaws: Article VII, Section 1).
    • Shall also serve as a member ex officio—with the right to vote—on all committees except the Nominating and Leadership Development Committee and shall make all required appointments of standing and special committees with the approval of the Board of Directors (Bylaws: Article VII, Section 1).
    • May sign, with the Secretary-Treasurer or any other proper officer of the Association authorized by the Board of Directors, any deeds, mortgages, contracts, or other instruments which the signing and execution thereof shall be expressly delegated by the Board of Directors or by these Bylaws or by statute to some other officer or agent of the Association, and shall perform such other duties as are necessary and incident to the office of the President or as may be prescribed by the Board of Directors (Bylaws: Article VII, Section 1).
    • Assumes duties at the close of the annual conference and serves a one-year term of office.
    • Makes all required appointments of Chairpersons and members of standing and special committees and task forces, with the approval of the ARN Board. Exceptions include the Chair of the Nominating and Leadership Development Committee, the Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee who are appointed by virtue of their office, and the members of the Nominating and Leadership Development Committee on years they are elected by the membership (see General Committee Policies for more details).
    • Acts as the official spokesperson for the association.
    • With Budget and Finance Committee, formulates the budget for presentation to the ARN Board.
    • Assigns ARN Board liaisons to committees and task forces.
    • Coordinates with staff to promote the association to the membership and public.
    • Maintains communications with the ARN Board and committees and members regarding the state of affairs of ARN.
    • Serves as a Chair of the RNF Board of Trustees.
    • Will attend the Nursing Organizations Alliance (NOA) Fall Summit each year.
  • President-Elect
    • Shall succeed to the Presidency and shall perform the duties of the President in the event of their inability to serve (Bylaws: Article VII, Section 2).
    • Duties shall be delegated by the Board of Directors (Bylaws: Article VII, Section 2).
    • Serves as a member of the Executive Committee.
    • Serves as a member of the Budget and Finance committee and participates in developing the annual budget.
    • Maintains regular communication with the president.
    • Becomes familiar with ARN Board procedure, ARN bylaws, policies, and procedures, ARN Board functions, legal counsel, management contract and evaluations, and the conduct of effective meetings.
    • Prior to assuming office as president, collaborates with staff and president to develop recommendations for committee appointments whose terms will begin under their term as president.
    • Serves as Co-Chair of the RNF Board of Trustees.
    • Serves as an ex-officio member of the RNCB Board, with no voting rights.
    • Will attend the Exceptional Boards: Strengthening the Governance Team workshop (typically with two ARN staff).
    • Will attend the American Nursing Association (ANA) Membership Assembly.

ARN Board of Directors Secretary/Treasurer

ARN Experience & Qualification Requirements

  • ARN member in good standing.
  • Committed to furthering the ARN’s mission.
  • Must have at least one year of service as a current member of the ARN Board of Directors.

  • The Secretary-Treasurer shall serve a three-year term.

Volunteer/ Engagement Responsibilities

  • Shall be in charge of the Association’s funds and records (Bylaws: Article VII, Section 3).
  • Shall collect all member dues; shall establish proper accounting procedures for the handling of the Association’s funds; and shall be responsible for keeping of the funds in such banks, trust companies, and/or investments as are approved by the Executive Committee (Bylaws: Article VII, Section 3).
  • Shall report on the financial condition of the Association at the annual conference, all meetings of the Board of Directors, and at other times when called upon by the President.
  • At the expiration of the term of office, the Secretary-Treasurer shall deliver over to their successor all books, money, and other property in their charge, or in the absence of a successor shall deliver such properties to the President (Bylaws: Article VII, Section 3).
  • Shall be responsible for the delivery of proper and legal written notices to members; shall see to the proper recording of the proceedings of meetings of the Association, Board of Directors, and all committees; shall carry into execution all orders, votes, and resolutions not otherwise committed; and shall see that accurate records are kept of all members (Bylaws: Article VII, Section 3).
  • Shall ensure that the audited financial report, approved budget of the Association, and minutes of board meetings are available upon the request of any member and at the member’s expense (Bylaws: Article VII, Section 3).
  • Serves as Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee and a member of the Executive Committee.
  • Ensures that approved funds management, investment, and other fiscal policies and procedures are followed, and recommends improvements as appropriate.
  • Works closely with staff to accomplish position responsibilities.
  • Reviews association expenditures and financial status on a regular basis to ensure overall financial integrity.
  • Presents financial reports to the ARN Board and an annual financial report to the membership.
  • Reviews quarterly financial statements. Reports financial status to the board, especially reviewing any significant variances from the budget.
  • Serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the RNF Board of Trustees.

ARN Board of Directors Director

    • Attends orientation meeting upon nomination to the board.
    • Maintains confidentiality, in accordance with the ARN Board Confidentiality Agreement.

    • Works in partnership with all ARN leaders and national office staff members.
    • Answers all association-related correspondence in a timely manner.
    • Before assuming office, must attend an ARN Board orientation session and will be assigned an ARN Board mentor.
    • Serves as a member of the RNF Board of Trustees.
    • Develops and approves policies and procedures.
    • Oversees and evaluates ARN programs to assure that strategic objectives and committee responsibilities are being met.
  • Leadership
    • Serve as an exemplary member of ARN.
    • Demonstrates leadership through a continuing commitment to the mission and strategic goals of ARN, full participation in its activities, and identification and mentoring of new leaders through formal and informal methods.
    • Acts in the best interest of the membership and is responsible to the membership.
    • Identifies and recommends opportunities for improvement for the organization.
    • Identifies board goals and objectives for their term of office and reviews at least annually.
    • Serves a liaison role with committees, task forces, external groups or representatives, and projects as appointed by the president; communicates directives from the ARN Board; and reports the group’s work and recommendations to the ARN Board.
    • Seeks out opportunities to mentor and serve as a role model to members.
    • Keeps appraised of current major nursing and health care issues especially related to rehab nursing and are prepared to address them when appropriate.
    • ARN Board members are required to serve as ambassadors on behalf of ARN.
    • Required to attend the Annual ARN Conference. Complementary registration is provided for all ARN Board Members. ARN Board members coordinate their own travel arrangements and submit expense reports for reimbursement.
    • Participates in town hall meetings that are open for all members to attend, at such time as the ARN Board may prescribe.
  • Fiscal
    • Exercises fiduciary responsibility by ensuring that ARN finances are responsibly managed and by approving responsible budgets.
    • Supports RNF through annual donations.
    • Reviews monthly financial reports to ensure that it accurately reflects accomplishments of the initiative/project.
    • Approves compensation agreement between the management office and ARN annually as part of the budget development process.
    • Ensures that projects stay within budget and timeline
