Exam and Eligibility Information

The examination is offered in June and December via a computerized delivery system. Candidates may test anytime during June or December when their local test center is open and has space available.


Candidates for the CRRN examination must meet the following eligibility criteria at the time of application:

  • Current, unrestricted US, US territories, or Canadian RN licensure
  • Completion of at least one of the following at the time of application:
    • Within the five years preceding the examination, completion of two years of practice as a registered professional nurse in rehabilitation nursing; or
    • Within the five years preceding the examination, completion of one year of practice as a registered professional nurse in rehabilitation nursing and one year of advanced study (beyond baccalaureate) in nursing.

Verification of Rehabilitation Nursing Experience

As part of the application process, you will be asked to provide contact information from two professional colleagues who are able to verify your rehabilitation nursing experience. One of the colleagues must be your immediate supervisor or another CRRN. Your supervisor need not be a nurse. The second individual may be any other professional colleague such as another nurse, physician, therapist, or social worker.

If you are in independent practice or have left paid employment to provide rehabilitation nursing care to a family member and you do not have a supervisor or CRRN colleague, you may be eligible for alternative verification.

To register for the examination, candidates must submit the complete application with payment by the application deadline.

The scheduling process begins approximately 40 days prior to the start of the testing window (ie. April 20 or October 20). The application approval process takes approximately 15 business days. Once your application has been approved, you will receive an e-mail containing a link to the examination schedule and you will schedule your examination based on the test site availability. Please be aware that each test site maintains its own schedule based on size and demand. 

Test Center Locations

Each testing center maintains its own schedule, based on overall demand and scheduling constraints. Some centers have a limited schedule or limited seating. Testing appointments are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Not all international test sites are available for this examination.
