Bowel Care Guidelines

The RNF Practice Guidelines for the Management of Constipation in Adults address an unmet need for nurses, physicians, and dietitians in rehabilitation, long-term care, and in home health, ambulatory, and community settings. Developed by an interdisciplinary group, the guidelines can be used to guide decision-making as to the assessment and treatment of constipation in adults. They are based on the best available scientific knowledge and expert consensus; their use facilitates implementation of the most up-to-date research findings.

The guidelines are in a .pdf file format that can be viewed using Adobe Acrobat software. The Adobe Reader software should be compatible with your operating system. If the Reader is not installed on your PC or your company's network, you can download it free of charge from

Once the software is installed, please follow these steps:
1.Double-click on the link below. The Acrobat software will open automatically and the guidelines will appear.
2.You can advance to the next page by clicking on the arrows in the menu bar at the top or the bottom of the screen.
3.To adjust the page size on screen, select 1 of the 3 icons in one of the menu bars that look like varying-sized sheets of paper.
4.NOTE: To print the file, do NOT use the printer icon. Instead, use File>Print>select Printer (if necessary)>select "Print as Image" (very important!) then select Fit to Page>OK. Do NOT use the printer icon to print the file as it will distort the pages being printed.

The table of contents also includes links for easy navigation--just click on a particular topic to be taken directly to that page in the document.
